This centre has been created recently (23 rd July, 2010) in order to impart
specialised teaching, laboratory and field based training to geology
students. This course has tremendous scope in the Oil Industry, which is
developing very rapidly. Petroleum geology offers opportunities in both
field based exploration and lab based research and development. Those who
are more inclined towards research and academics, they can get into
Universities and Institutes. Therefore, this job oriented course was
initiated in order to meet the increasing demands of the Petroleum Industry
and academic institutions.
The main objective of the first semester syllabus is to teach the students
the fundamental aspects of various disciplines of Geology, such as
stratigraphy and micropalaeontology, which have a direct relevance in
Petroleum Exploration and Development. A great deal of emphasis has also
been laid on the Geological Structures and Sedimentary environments in this
Semester. In the second Semester, various techniques in the Petroleum
Exploration and Development with special emphasis on Geo-physics and
Geo-chemical Exploration are taught. This is followed by an introduction to
the study of reservoirs. In the third semester, the students are exposed to
the topic of reservoirs, well site techniques, production, economics, policy
and managements, in greater detail. They are also taught about the
alternative sources of fuel in this semester. In the final semester the
students are expected to undergo placement and attachment training at
various oil companies, carry out project work and finally submit their
reports.
